Orthokeratology lenses are customized contact lens molds that are worn at night and removed each morning. The molding of the cornea is intended to allow the patient to see clearly during the day without glasses or contact lenses. Later on, it was discovered that these lenses affect the way light focuses on peripheral retina. It is these peripheral rays of light that appear to stimulate the eye to become more myopic in some patients. By refocusing the light in the periphery, animal studies confirm that the Research has shown that that of all of the optical solutions that have been studied, Ortho-K controls myopia the most. Some studies suggest slowing myopia by 55% to 100%. The optimal age to begin this therapy is approximately at age 7. The studies followed patients from age 6 to age 14. Dr. Gording has been successful in slowing or stopping the progression of myopia.
